Resume Writing
A professional resume is crucial to a successful job search. Your resume is your chance to make a strong first impression with an employer – one that will secure you an interview. In this workshop, you will learn techniques for effective resume and cover letter writing.

Interviewing Skills
The job interview is your opportunity to market your skills to a potential employer, and is key to receiving a job offer. This workshop will help you to prepare for the job interview so you will be confident and ready to make an impression.

Internet Job Search
The Internet can be great resource for job searching and getting resume exposure. During this workshop we will visit various job search sites, post your resume in several databases and visit company websites to get more inside information. A resume in Microsoft Word is required to participate.

Networking 101
Effective networking will greatly increase your job search success. 80% of jobs are found through this method of job search alone. Learn what networking is and how to go about using this valuable tool in your quest for employment.

Information
Our weekly Information session will introduce you to all of the Job Search and Training services our office can provide. Application procedures for WIA training funding will also be reviewed.

Will County Work Certified Training
Approximately 50 specific competencies are included in this 2 week program that covers work maturity/employability, academic performance, occupational and technical skills, and general business concepts.

In addition, assessments are made in “universal competencies,” which include:

  • demonstration of attendance and punctuality
  • demonstration of proper grooming
  • demonstration of respect of authority when interacting with a supervisor
  • demonstration of effective interpersonal skills when interacting with co-workers.

Additional topics included in the 60-hours are reading comprehension, customer service, business math, general business knowledge, work and employability job skills, business tools and computers and more.

Refresh & Review
This is a “brush-up” class for those adults planning to return to the classroom after many years or to re-enter the workforce. Individuals work at their own pace to review math and reading concepts that they once knew but have since forgotten. This class is “FREE” and was designed specifically for adults!

Will County Workforce System Career Closet
The Will County Workforce System consists of a group of organizations that provide core and specialty services to job seekers and employers in Will County.

As a part of the System wide services the Career Closet offers individuals professional types of clothing at no cost. Clothes are suitable for interviews and the workplace. The Career Closet is located at the Joliet Junior College City Center Campus, 214 N. Ottawa Street, Room 400. Call 815-280-1454 for more information.

College 101 – A Program for Displaced Workers
Unemployed individuals, who have an interest in returning to school to upgrade current job skills, or to train for a new career, now have a program designed especially for them at Joliet Junior College.

Offered through JJC’s Community & Economic Development (CED), this program offers a holistic, specific-needs-based orientation. This orientation serves as a springboard to discovery for people faced with life changes due to job loss, or who are looking to begin a new career.

The program is geared specifically to the adult learner facing the challenges of losing a job. Some of these challenges include:

  • Intense financial pressures from losing a “good-paying” job
  • Fear of not knowing how to navigate through the college environment
  • Concerns of being out of place because of age
  • Being unable to mange their course loads and other responsibilities
  • Feeling “rusty” because they had been out of school from many years.

Other topics for discussion include: career exploration and advising, financial resources, support services, admissions procedures, Certificates and Associate degree options, short-term non-credit training, Illinois Employment and Training Center services, and basic skills review.

National Retail Foundation Customer Service
The Will County Workforce Investment Board, the National Retail Foundation, the Grand Victoria Foundation, the Metropolitan Workforce Boards of Illinois, and Joliet Junior College Workforce Development have partnered to offer customer service and sales training, assessment and credentialing, at no cost to Will County residents. This training and credentialing will insure that employers are getting a well-qualified employee especially when hiring in any of the service areas such as retail and hospitality.

Technical Opportunities Program
Chicago Women in Trades have partnered with Joliet Junior College Workforce Development to offer a program to females interested in a non-traditional career! This 12-week program develops the skills required to be successful when applying to trade unions and is at no cost to females selected for the program. This program focuses on math skill development, improved physical fitness, and will introduce women to different unions and the work associated with each.

Females for Employment in Manufacturing
Are you a female who is interested in entering the rapidly growing manufacturing industry? Females for Employment in Manufacturing is a free program that prepares women for careers in manufacturing. This 10-week program will equip participants with field specific math skills and work readiness skills. The program will also include exploration of manufacturing career paths, tours of manufacturing plants, and job placement assistance and is made possible by a partnership with the Will County Workforce Investment Board and a grant from the Alcoa Foundation.

Career Assessment Seminar
Do you want a career and not just another job? If you want to make a change, this seminar is for you! Let us help you make an informed career choice and develop a career plan by taking and reviewing the results of three assessment instruments. No cost to Will County residents.

Bridging the Digital Divide
Wish you knew how to use a computer but are afraid to ask? You are not alone. This class will provide you with the basic skills required to live in a world where computers are a necessity. By the end you will feel confident using WORD, email, the internet, and will be formatting your own resume. No cost to eligible candidates.

Career Seekers
Club for youth ages 15-21 who meet WIA eligibility can participate in work readiness and leadership sessions including: interactive interviewing, goal setting, communication, career exploration, stress management, job shadowing, basic skills, conflict resolution, and much more. This program is held in partnership with, and receives funding from, the Will County Workforce Investment Board, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and the United States Department of Labor. No cost to Will County eligible youth.
