Workplace Security

Workplace violence, domestic and international terrorism, and the destruction of property have become valid concerns in the United States over the past few years. The following workshops discuss ways to reduce the chances that an incident may occur at your facility as well as what to do if something does happen.

Class Listings

Basic Concepts of Terrorism (SAF 833)
This eight hour seminar helps the attendee to understand terrorism and recognize suspicious circumstances in advance. Learn what actions to take during each of the incident categories, (biological, nuclear, incendiary, chemical and explosive). Control the scene until help arrives by using isolation, evacuation and other control measures. Know how to get help from local, state and federal resources.
Drugs in the Workplace (SAF 830)
Many times drug usage is associated with workplace violence as well as attendance, safety, and quality issues. Learn to identify specific drugs, observe and document employee behavior and work performance, and discuss the issue with the employee in a tactful manner. Discuss methods of detecting drugs and alcohol use and how to utilize employee assistance programs.

Safety

Safety training is just good business. By reducing the number of accidents, your organization saves on insurance, workman's compensation expense, absenteeism, and costly exposure to fines and penalties.

10-Hour OSHA General Industry Course (SAF 841)(Presented entirely in Spanish)
An overview of the basic OSHA safety standards presented in a compact two day format. This class teaches vital safety and health information to all personnel responsible for a safe working environment on the job site. Those attending will better understand OSHA’s role in industry. After completing the required ten hours, participants will receive the OSHA Certification Card.

24-Hour HAZWOPER Training (SAF 812)
This three day seminar is designed for workers who come in contact with hazardous materials, substances, or wastes. Discussion will focus on hazardous materials identification, hazard communications, personal protective equipment, transportation, storage and packaging, monitoring equipment, site surveys, and spill and leak control.
Safety Basics in Spanish (SAF 897)
This workshop, presented in Spanish, emphasizes hazard identification, avoidance and control. Learn to analyze a worksite to identify possible accidents before they happen. Discuss the use of engineering controls to reduce the risk of injury. Review OSHA required training such as Hazcom, PPE, Bloodborne Pathogen control, and electrical safety. Identify the employee's role in an organization's safety health program.
Safety Program Administration (SAF 895)
Improve the safety and health program for your organization. Learn to analyze your workplace, involve your employees in the initial stages, train supervisors and workers, and document your program. Discuss budgeting and the legal ramifications of the program with top management. Establish maintenance audits, enforcement procedures, data collection, and analysis.
HazMat and DOT Awareness (SAF 835)
The US Department of Transportation (DOT) regulates the transportation of hazardous material by air, water, rail or motor vehicle. The Hazardous Material Regulations (HMR) requires that any employee who directly affects hazardous material transportation safety must be familiar with the regulations. This program covers the regulation's requirements for classification, packaging, hazard communication, incident reporting, handling and transportation of hazardous materials.

ISO 9001:2000 Internal Quality Auditing (CQS 941)
This two-day seminar is designed for the internal quality auditors of an ISO 9001:2000 registered organization. Emphasis will be placed on the principles of ISO 9001:2000 and auditing compliance to the ISO standard. Individuals will gain skills needed to plan, prepare, and perform internal quality audits. This training provides hands-on audit activities that simulate an actual audit environment. Topics include procedure review, checklist development, conducting interviews, audit performance, audit reporting, and closeout. Case studies and practice audit activities are used through out the presentation.

Process Auditing for ISO/TS 16949:2002 (CQS 1021)
This two-day seminar will provide an introduction to the ISO/TS 16949, second edition quality standard. Learn to perform the internal auditing required by the standard. Understand the process principles of this quality management system by discussing process descriptions and controls. Prepare for process audits by examining audit methods and strategies, setting levels of control, and documenting audit plans and process flow diagrams. Learn to analyze the compliance and performance data collected from the audits and report the data using internal reporting requirements. The training includes practical, hands-on audit activities.

Fundamentals of Quality Control (CQS 1029)
This seminar introduces the basic quality principles and practices that are used in successful organizations. The program begins with a detailed discussion of quality philosophy and then proceeds to a detailed description of quality application. Determine the components of Total Quality Management (TQM). Discuss process management, process mapping, and cycle time reduction. Learn to use quality tools such as control charts, cause and effect diagrams, affinity diagrams, histograms, failure mode and effects analysis, and benchmarking. The course can be used as an introduction of quality tools for new employees, refresher training for employees with some background in quality, or as a starting for an individual interested in an entry level position in the quality field. Materials are based on the American Society for Quality (ASQ)'s body of knowledge and provide an excellent preparation resource for the Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA) certification exam. The class also meets the human resource training requirements under Section 6.2 of the ISO standards.

The Production Part Approval Process (CQS 1027)
Participants will gain an understanding of the production part approval process (PPAP) that is utilized in the automotive supply chain. This seminar explains the procedures, reporting requirements and activities specified in the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) PPAP manual. Topics include: submission levels and the associated requirements for document and sample retention/submission, reporting, and process capability requirements.
Introduction to Pre-Control Techniques (CQS 1028)
Learn this simple charting technique that can be used to statistically monitor and analyze process performance for improved process control and continual improvement. This process is most easily understood and implemented at the operator level, as it requires no mathematical calculations. Topics to be covered include types of data, variation, histograms, control limits, sampling requirements, chart analysis, and process start/stop signals. Applications for both variable and attribute data will also be discussed.
Establishing a Statistical Process Control System (CQS 1024)
Participants in this course will learn a complete set of statistical tools that can be used to monitor and analyze process performance for improved process control, continual improvement, and customer satisfaction. Topics to be covered include histograms, the normal distribution, special and common causes of variation, and predicting process performance. Participants will learn how to apply these concepts to initiate a process capability study and analyze process performance, calculating process control limits and creating X bar and R charts. Process Capability measurement will also be discussed, including accuracy and precision, and Cp and Cpk. Additional topics include sampling alternatives and risks, attribute charts, and other charting techniques.
Evaluating Measurement Systems (CQS 1025)
Be able to select appropriate measurement systems to help ensure product quality and customer satisfaction. Different statistical properties of measurement systems will be discussed. This information can then be used to help companies determine if consistent and accurate measurement results can be obtained, with both variable and attribute gages. Topics to be covered include: measurement discrimination, bias, linearity, stability, and gage repeatability and reproducibility (R&R). Students will participate in a computer simulation of a gage R&R study and analyze the results. Students will also learn to evaluate solutions to different types of measurement system problems.
Basics of Advanced Product Quality Planning (CQS 1026)
Conduct quality planning activities according to automotive supply chain requirements established with TS16949 registration. Topics include: establishing the cross-functional team, inputs and outputs of the planning process, evaluating the appropriate control needed for different process types, control plan methodology and content. Participants will also learn how to conduct a Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) for improved product and process reliability.
How to Save Money with Lean (MGT 804)
Learn how the concepts of Lean Manufacturing apply to your operation. Concentrate on the elimination of waste that will result in lower costs, higher quality, and improved delivery. Discuss the key concepts of "Lean" and how it is used by other successful organizations. Use diagnostic and problem solving tools to formulate a transformation outline for your operations. Identify the organizational responsibilities required during the lean manufacturing process implementation.
JIT: Not Just for the Accountants (MGT 805)
Proper implementation of "Just in Time" (JIT) methods not only reduces inventory, but also results in improved quality and better delivery performance. Discuss Push vs. Pull systems, MRP and JIT compatibility, lot sizing, and release and replenish notification methods. Identify JIT pitfalls and compensating controls. Determine the best ways to balance inventory management with delivery performance.
A New Approach: Formal Problem Solving Techniques (MGT 806)
Learn to solve quality and process problems by utilizing a series of formal, scientific approaches. Discuss root cause analysis, process mapping, tree diagrams, "pokeyoke" (error proofing), and Pareto charts. Define diagnostic tools such as 5S, the Three MU's, and the Four M's. Understanding these tools is the first step towards establishing a continuous improvement program for your organization.
Improve Your Productivity and Get Ahead (MGT 799)
If you find yourself overloaded with additional duties inherited from the latest office cutback, then it is time to take control. Learn to utilize your time, eliminate your clutter, and limit the interruptions. This interactive program will provide an opportunity to acquire tips and techniques that can assist you in becoming more productive.
Business Telephone Techniques (MGT 802)
Improve your telephone skills and impress your customers. Identify words and phrases that should be avoided. Discuss methods to defuse the difficult customer. Review phone etiquette including putting people on hold and taking accurate messages.
Communicate with Confidence (MGT 801)
Communication skills are essential in the fast paced environment of today's office. Learn to influence others by speaking more clearly and listening more closely. Be aware of the non- verbal messages that you are sending and receiving.
Computer Graphics for Administrative Professionals (MGT 7057)
Today, there are many inexpensive software programs available that will allow you to make your routine, written communications into a more dynamic, readable document. Topics include presentation tools like charts, maps, and graphics that will make your boss look good. Learn how to design bulletin board announcements that get read, promotional flyers and brochures that look professional, public announcements that get printed, and clear, concise business forms.
Teamwork in the Office (MGT 803)
If it seems that your coworkers are working against each other rather than with each other, this seminar can help. Identify the various roles people assume in a group situation and anticipate common pitfalls the group will encounter. Encourage group participation and "ownership". Learn to hold effective and brief meetings.
Basic Spanish (MGT 7058)
Expand your language skills or grasp the basics of Spanish through conversation and listening. Discuss the basic pronunciation of vowels and consonants in Spanish. Learn vocabulary, sentence structure, and how to ask and answer basic questions. This course is designed for the student with no previous knowledge of Spanish.

Spanish for Health Care Workers (MGT 7059)
This seminar will help you communicate with patients who speak Spanish. Concentrate on words and phrases that you can use on the job. Use common healthcare situations such as patient registration, explaining laboratory procedures and performing treatments as role play situations to increase you vocabulary. Learn to convey comfort and concern for your patients with a few carefully selected phrases. This class would be useful to doctors, nurses, medial assistants, hospital administration, and front desk personnel. Class materials including a CD for practicing at home are included.
Spanish for the Business Professional (MGT 7063)
Participants will learn the alphabet, letter sounds, and names, numbers, how to tell time, and basic information. This is an excellent introductory course to Spanish for non-speakers. Be advised this is a fun seminar for individuals who want to enjoy learning Spanish (20 hours).

Spanish Review (MGT 7060)
The old saying "Use it or lose it" rings especially true when it is applied to a foreign language. This seminar is designed for someone who has taken Spanish in high school or college in the past and would like to sharpen those skills. If you "picked up" a practical knowledge of the Spanish through work or family connections, this class will also help you expand on that base. Emphasis will be placed on pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Increase your conversational skills and understanding.
Practical Spanish for the Classroom (MGT 7061)
This program is targeted for teachers, school administrators, library staff, and child care professionals who are seeking to expand their Spanish language skills. Improve the communication with your Spanish speaking students by learning key words and phrases that apply to an educational setting. Work out difficult pronunciations and accents. Learn how to communicate approval and disapproval with a varying degree of emphasis. Gain insight into the Latin American culture. Class materials including a CD for practicing at home are included.
